	Many people regard society as a person that owes them
something, which expects something of them, which can be
coerced, to which criminals can pay their debt, and which
can demand the best from each of us.  Others regard society
as like a machine which can function well or badly.  My opinion
is that the second model is on the whole better and leads to
fewer tragedies.
